Are walking poles necessary?

If you’re comfortable walking 7 miles with some steep descents and ascents, climbing over styles and navigating  muddy fields then don’t feel you have to use walking poles. However if a 7 mile walk feels like quite a stretch, if you feel like you could use a little help to stay balanced while going down steep and sometimes slippery paths, or if you have sensitive knees, hips or ankles walking poles could be very helpful.
